Holocash

von zeev avrahami

I Have travelled to Krakow in the last couple of days for an article. I had some shocking moments there, especially when a 72-old Israeli by the name of Yehudit, identified herself in one of the pictures in block six in Auschwitz. Apparently, she and her twin sister, Leah, were Mengele’s favorite toys.

Krakow is a beautiful city, very vibrant and hip, filled with young people. But walking in the Jewish quarter, after having camp cocktail, I couldn’t stop seeing faces, families at the dinner table, praying for the wine, looking out at me and making sure that I will never forget them or stop telling their story.

The general thought is that without “Schindler’s List”, Krakow would be another beautiful European big city. But now you can’t stop notice the signs, byproducts and the thousands of people in Krakow and its satellites cities and villages making money of the… weiter lesen

Sanity Island

von zeev avrahami

I was in the middle of writing an article, when my wife called and told me about the new Jean Marie Sarkozy idea: deporting 88 Gypsies back to Romania. I guess it is really not that comfortable to digest your steak tartar listening to this annoying accordion. I was thinking: Those who didn’t learn from the past in Germany are really in the outskirts. In France they are running the country.

It is quite amazing when you think about it. Holland turned to the right and against its immigrants, so did Denmark, in Switzerland they don’t want visible Masques (but are not very selective about the money in the bank), Austria is Austria, Slovakia have mad leaders, and I am quite sure that some of the Hungarian leaders wouldn’t be accepted to the Nazi party on the grounds that they are too extreme.

So, basically Germany is an island of sanity… weiter lesen

Hate Parade

von zeev avrahami

I didn’t and still don’t have much to say about the terrible deaths at the Love Parade a few weeks ago. It is sad on its own and it is sad that an event that started the way the Love Parade started and stood for some hope, ended like that.

But I am just wondering: how come revelers who gather to dance, get high, and be loved were treated like this? How come NPD and Nazi parades are never diverted into tunnels that can’t hold the number of marchers? It is a little bit at the same wavelength of political policies: everyone is hunting down someone who grows some weed on his balcony, and still nicotine companies are allowed to be traded publicly.

I think that it could be a very good initiative by the police. Next Nazi Parade? count the heads and let them walk into a tunnel that… weiter lesen

When God Sings

It was supposed to be part 2 of Kirsten’s birthday present (the first was the Stevie Wonder’s concert), but Kirsten is away, so I went with Maya. Which is great news: you don’t want to be with the love of your life when Leonard Cohen is around.

Leonard Cohen was the first music I have heard in my life. My older sister, Orna, made me sit and listen to him when I was about ten years old. His music is the soundtrack of my life: the love I missed, friends that I don’t see no more, hopes and dream that will never be fulfilled, sex, music, lies, emotions, memories, longing. Leonard Cohen is an angel who can make love to 10,000 people and still be intimate. He is kissing you on the cheek and makes you feel like you were ran over by a tank. He… weiter lesen

The Full Story of Samuel Kunz

von zeev avrahami

Last Week I wrote here a brief a brief account of my encounter with Samuel Kunz who, according to prosecution, was involved in the murder of 434,000 Jews in Belzec and killed ten of them on his own initiative. I contacted a local paper and told them that I want to offer them the story. The paper answered me that they can’t print the story, partially because I mention the name and address of Kunz.

So I have decided to run the entire story here. I really don’t care. I think that if someone will come to question me I will have the correct answer: it took Germany 65 years to find someone who helped in the murdering of thousands of people, but it took them two minutes to find someone who exposed his real name and address. So here it is, sue me:

Hermann Heck was certain his search… weiter lesen

What Else I don’t Know About Myself?

I love writing blogs. I love the whole concept of blogs. You can write in blogs whatever is on your mind. No censorship, no editors to tell you this and that and no annoying sales people who dictate how long you can write because we must leave some space for baby food ads. I love blogs because you can write whatever is on your mind about your spouse and always use the excuse that it is artistic freedom. I would write poetry, fiction and even Haiku if I was talented enough to write those.

But mainly I love blogs because they let you have immediate and direct connection with your readers, hear what they really think about you and what you write, and they give me the ability to have a fruitful discussions about different issues. And sometimes they can completely change your life.

Last week… weiter lesen

The Banality of Assimilation-The story of Samuel Kunz

von zeev avrahami

Haaretz published today my story about the alleged Nazi Samuel Kunz (the story is in Hebrew, but in this link you can see an exclusive picture of him and an old picture showing that he wasn’t so miserable at the death camp). I spent a day in the pastoral village he lives in with his wife and son, trying to see what a man who, according to the prosecution, was involved in the murder of over 430,000 Jews (10 were killed by him personally), looks like.

I waited and waited outside his house. I talked to the next door neighbor who moved there just a month and was shocked to hear that his neighbor (and landlord) is a fucking monster. Samuel Kunz’s son (what a Jewish name, isn’t it?) appeared in the window and motioned me to leave, I motioned him to come down and talk to me, and… weiter lesen

Nazi-land, 230 kilometers southwest of Berlin

von zeev avrahami

Warning: this is a very long post. It includes a little entry followed by a magazine article. Anyone who doesn’t have the patient can read the shorter version here.

A couple of months ago I read a news report about an attack of an Israeli teenager in the city of Laucha. The story grabbed my attention when I read about the family history of the victim: one of his grandfather was the only survivor of his family from the Holocaust, the other died in the attack of Israeli athletes during the 1972 Olympic games in Munich.

So I drove there and filed this unbelievable story for Haaretz. Then I called some local papers and offered the story for free, I just felt that it was my duty as a journalist and citizen to get the story to as many people as possible. Every paper refused my offer giving a… weiter lesen
