The Fireman

* Your three favourite Punk singles/songs?

** The Damned: “New Rose”
** Velvet Underground: “Rock n Roll”
** Sex Pistols: “Anarchy in the UK”
** Iggy and the Stooges: “No Fun”

* Your favourite song by Pete Doherty?

The Libertines: “Can’t stand me now”

* Your favourite Jamaican ska/reggae track?

** Prince Buster: “Gangsters”
** The Specials: “Too much too Young”
** Bob Marley: “Redemtion Song”
** Roland Alphonso & The Upsetters: “Roll On”

* The best thing Bill Drummond has ever done?

Burning a million quid was a genius marketing/tax move….although I had publically burnt money in 1979 in my bank managers office!
….he threw me out in a rage ..it was only £5 but was reported in the NME as £20000!!!! it’s symbolic….money in itself has no value …it’s just paper but what it represents really is confidence.

The books “45” and “17” are also genius and fantastic but musically it has to be “What time is Love” by THE KLF.

* Who do you regard as the best/most interesting record producer right now?

well there a few ….In Rock …David Sitek is definately coming from a direction i love and is making strange and beautifull sounds yet hasnt really reached his potential yet.

I still love Brian Eno, Rick Rubin, Trevor Horn and Nigel Godrich – all for totally different reasons !

but for pop genius Timbaland and Pharrell lead the way. Sweden has some amazing producers: Max Martin really changed the face of pop…..

Ryan Teber has a great touch for pop zeitgeist production is of a very high standard today ,when a Girls Aloud or Brittany Spears single sounds more edgy and dangerous than a hip alt rock act or some grime track then you know the bar has been raised!

let’s not forget “D.A.N.C.E.” by Justice has had a huge influence deservedly and James Ford is brilliant: he can go from Simian Mobile Disco to the Arctic Monkeys without blinking!

And Mark Ronsons work with Amy Winehouse is undisputably godlike genius. And i like his Lily Allen work to …my kids love it!

lets not forget XDream from Germany… Jan and Marcus …along with Si Posford have produced the most earthquaking electronic trance tracks I’ve ever heard on a 20K Rig.

But I think my favorite in the last few years is Brian Burton (Dangermouse) from Gnarls Barkley. “Crazy”…what a sound …what a song! Genius! “The Grey album”…!

I believe that the producer – to quote George Martin – “should be concerned with the art of the work” and Brian certainly does that!

* …and which album did you like the most regarding its production in recent years?

“White Rainbow” by Prism of Eternal Now or “This will destroy you”

* The best song and album by the Beatles?

very tricky these favorite lists …hence the long answers…particulary this one

so …this week my fav beatles tune is “I’m only sleeping” and album would have to be “Revolver” but it changes daily!

* The best song this year so far?

The Ting Tings: “Thats Not My Name”
Jack White & Alicia Keys: “Another Way To Die”

* What’s the best record you were involved in?

Killing Joke 1st album, “Urban Hymns” by The Verve, “Together Alone” by Crowded House , Orb: “Adventures” and The Fireman: “Electric arguments”

* Your favourite german song/record?

** Neu ,
** Kraftwerk,
** DAF and
** Can
not necessarily in that order

this year: Eine Klein Nacht and anything produced by Connie Plank.

* Your favourite record of all time?

Could be “wish you were here” (Pink Floyd), Led Zeppelins “Physical Graffiti”, Dylan “Blood on the Tracks”, Alan Lomax “Folk Chronicles”, Public Image Ltd., Chic “C’est chic”, Plastic Ono Band, Talk Talk “Spirit of Eden”… “Rock On” by David Essex!
