Monarchie & Alltag

Neue Bands und wichtige Filme: „As long as the music’s loud enough, we won’t hear the world falling apart“.

* Your favourite song lyrics?

“Watch out for the gypsy children in electric dresses they are insane”
– Pavement, You are a light

* The best “new” artist / band right now?

The Rent Boys.
The stage shows are immense, they never bring their own music equipment because their van is just full of props: Giant teddy bears that get torn apart; a van full of charity shop clothes so the whole audience dress up; once they covered the venue floor in mattresses which made for an unsteady audience experience.

* Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand or The Libertines – which one do you prefer and why?

The Libertines. They are the best out of a bunch of things I don’t really listen to. Libertines seemed the most authentic to me, rough around the edges and a kind of free approach to melody and lyrics that wasn’t trying to Impress.

* Your favourite song last year?

Wampire – The Hearse. The new american psychedelic movement can be an excuse for some really boring music but it has also thrown up some pop gems like this.

* Your favourite movie about music?

The Power of Salad and Milkshakes. Documentary film about Lightning Bolt. When I had a real job that I hated Lightning Bolt would be my Friday drive home music. It had the same release of tension qualities that Rage against the Machine had on my 13 year old self.

* The most overrated band/artist?

Thats a really tough question. Anyone who gains attention as a musician relies on an element of luck as well as financial investment and timing so it’s stupid to resent artists who do well even if you think they are rubbish. Most people who are successful have worked pretty hard to get there. That being said I could give you a massive list of bands etc that I don’t understand why they are so popular. I won’t though.

* The best song you’ve ever written / recorded?

We could be blood is my favourite.

* Your favourite german song/record?

Einstürzende Neubauten – Die explosion im Festspielhaus

* Your favourite record of all time?

I wanna destroy you – The Soft Boys
