Eigentlich wollten wir mit Dan Sartain unsere beliebte “German Blind Date” – Rubrik fortsetzen, ihm also fünf deutsche Acts vorspielen und diese von ihm mit der Unwissenheit und vor allem Unvoreingenommenheit des Amerikaners kommentiert bekommen. Dan antwortete aber charmant, dass er sich dazu nicht berufen fühle und würde lieber fünf eigene Lieblingssongs/-videos im Popblog vorstellen. Da sagen wir natürlich nicht nein:

This song is so tough it knocks my socks off. This T Rex cover is sometimes too aggressive for hardcore Bauhaus fans. It doesn’t sound particularly like Bauhaus and it certainly doesn’t sound like T Rex. It’s like an alternate universe version of Bauhaus that is hard as nails and cuts to the chase. Bauhaus chooses good songs to cover. They are the only band that can cover ‘Ziggy Stardust’ and not be totally embarrassing. Their live version of Iggy’s ‘The Passenger’ is very passable. Peter Murphy can get away with a lot of things most singers can’t.
THE PLASMATICS: THE DAMNED

This video is so fucking good, it’s a mystery why people kept making videos after this. It has everything anybody could want out of a music video. It starts with a fucking Rattlesnake staring your ass down, then a warning that this is a video made by professionals and that you should not attempt this at home. It lives up to the warning. Wendy-O-Williams surfing on top of a seemingly unmanned school bus before it crashes into a wall of televisions and bursts into flames is probably the best thing ever filmed. God bless her.
THE FLESH EATERS: THE WEDDING DICE

The Flesh Eaters and Chris D (Desjardins) should be household names. Chris D is a real poet. He is the only consistent member of the Flesh Eaters. Members come and go, but it is Chris D’s band. The name Flesh Eaters has a mark of quality to it. You can’t find a bad record by this band if you try (if you are able to find them at all). These dudes look as cool and tough as they sound. If this video were a preview for an actual film, I’d watch that film on repeat for a month.
THE GO GO’S: THIS TOWN (TOTALLY GO-GO’S 1981)

I’m kinda cheating and putting a live video in here. If there is an opportunity to say something nice about the Go Go’s, I’m going to take it. These girls come from an era where they had to be insanely talented to survive. Nothing was handed to them. They seem like classic entertainers now. At the time, they were just kids and so were we. One of the best put together bands ever. Not a weak link among them. The Go Go’s were/are the total package.

I once met John Doe after a show X played in New Orleans. I ran up to him in the street. I shook his hand and told him he writes better lyrics than Bob Dylan. He said “You’re wrong, but thank you.”, then he walked off into the dark like the cool motherfucker he is. I was right, though.

Ich dachte damals auch, das Bauhaus-Cover von “Ziggy Stardust” ist unglaublicherweise irgendwie noch besser als das Original, und diese Einschätzung hat sich bis heute gehalten.
