Es ist ja immer so eine Sache mit der Satire, wie auch die taz mit ihrem Titelbild schon erfahren musste. Jetzt hat sich der New Yorker ins Zeug gelegt und in einem einzigen Titel alle dummen Smears der Rechten gegen Michelle und Barack Obama zusammengetragen – und die Obama-Kampagne fühlt sich beleidigt und angegriffen. Wahlkampf ist offenbar eine humorlose Sache.

Dass das Thema Gun Control wieder in den Kanon der wichtigen Wahlkampfthemen aufrücken würde, war nach dem Urteil des Obersten Gerichtshofes, mit dem das recht strikte Waffengesetz von Washington DC für verfasssungswidrig erklärt worden war, schon abzusehen. Wie sehr das Thema und die NRA Obama schaden kann, bleibt abzuwarten. Ich kann mich jedenfalls nicht erinnern, dass die NRA jemals für einen Demokraten in die Bütt gestiegen wäre – nicht einmal für John Kerry, der in der Hochphase des Wahlkampfes demonstrativ Enten jagen ging…

Im übrigen vermeldet die Christliche Rechte, in diesem Fall in Gestalt von Gary Bauer, neue Erfolge bei der Mobilisierung gegen die Homoehe – bereits in drei Bundesstaaten sei es gelungen, im November erneut Referenden gegen die Homoehe anzusetzen.

At least three states will be voting on marriage protection amendments this November – California, Florida and Arizona. Turnout by men and women of faith will be critical to the success of each effort, and the media, legal and political establishments will be paying very close attention to the results in each state.

In 2006, Arizona became the only state in the nation to vote down a marriage protection amendment. The amendment narrowly lost after an extensive misinformation campaign by homosexual activists and confusing language added to the ballot by state bureaucrats. Pro-family activists in the state have been working hard to get a marriage protection amendment back on the ballot in 2008, but they have had to overcome one roadblock after another every step of the way. Last Wednesday, liberals in the Arizona state Senate defeated by one vote an attempt to put the amendment on the ballot. The timing of the vote seemed orchestrated as two conservative state senators were out of town and missed the vote. But pro-family legislators did not give up. Once all the amendment supporters were on hand late Friday evening, conservatives forced a second vote, overcame liberal stalling tactics and prevailed in a 16-to-4 vote.

Like Ohio in 2004, the outcome of the presidential contest could turn on the results of the marriage amendment in Florida, a key battleground state. State marriage amendments are regrettably needed because militant homosexuals and liberal judicial activists refuse to respect the will of the people. But nowhere is that sad reality more obvious than in California, where voters passed a defense of marriage law at the ballot box in 2000 with 61% of the vote only to see the liberal state Supreme Court discover a previously unknown right for men to “marry” other men.

These three marriage protection amendments in critical states highlight the importance of men and women of faith being informed and active in the great public policy debates of our time. I would like to believe that everyone who receives this daily report is registered to vote, but the statistics suggest otherwise. Hier lauern echte Gefahren für Obama.

To compete, Barack has put his faith in ordinary people giving only what they can afford. That’s been the strategy of this campaign from the beginning, and more than 1,500,000 supporters like you have gotten us this far.

We have a historic opportunity to prove that a movement of ordinary people has the power to change the way political campaigns are funded. And we have a clear goal as we begin this new challenge: 50,000 people declaring their independence by making a donation before July 4th.
