Es ist eine besondere Freude mit Anton Newcombe einen der großen Exzentriker des Musikgeschäfts in unserer Lieblingsplatten-Rubrik begrüßen zu können. Seit 1988 (!) tritt Newcombe mit wechselnden Musikern unter dem Namen The Brian Jonestown Massacre auf und hat einen so unverwechselbaren Sound geschaffen, dass Beschreibungen anderer Bands als “klingt wie Brian Jonestown” in gewissen Kreisen als Wiedererkennungsmerkmal wie Gütesiegel zugleich funktioniert.
Der BJM-Sound ist gleichermaßen von Krautrock wie Psych-Rock beeinflusst, hat etwas eineindeutiges und ist doch nie genau zu fassen, weil Newcombe viel zu eklektizistisch in seinem Songwriting ist, so dass für jedes “Let’s Go Fucking Mental” eben auch ein “David Bowie I Love You Since I Was Six” auf seinen Platten zu finden ist:

Gerade ist sein 14. Album erschienen und ab Sonntag befindet sich Newcombe, der in der Zwischenzeit nach Berlin gezogen ist, auf einer kleinen, von vielen heiß ersehnten Deutschlandtour (Termine siehe unten).
