Monarchie & Alltag

Neue Bands und wichtige Filme: „As long as the music’s loud enough, we won’t hear the world falling apart“.

Tyson Vogel:

** The Flesh Eaters – Satan’s Stomp (A Minute to Pray, A Second To Die)
** Minor Threat – In My Eyes (Minor Threat)
** Black Flag – Damaged II (Damaged)

* A record that will make you dance?

Adam Stephens: Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock. Anyone who can hear “Watermelon Man” and resist the primordial impulse to shake a foot has, in my opinion, lost an essential part of their humanity. It’s a slow groove but that’s the best way to get your grind on.

* Your favourite song lyrics?

AS:
“I am a little orphan girl
my mother she is dead
my father is a drunkard
and won’t buy me my bread”

* The best “new” artist / band right now?

TV: I have been impressed very much with the output, conviction towards aching emotional expression, and an honesty, if not revealed vulnerability though music that Angel Olsen has been working to harness.

* Your favourite song by Johnny Cash?

AS: I’ve always had a big place in my heart for “That’s Enough”. It was actually written by Dorothy Love Coates but most of the songs he recorded weren’t his and you didn’t specify. Anyway, it’s all about Jesus which isn’t really my thing but it has this attitude that other gospel tunes just don’t come close to. The general sentiment isn’t your typical, “jesus rules, you blow, and you’re gonna burn if you don’t learn”.

There’s no prosthelytizing at all. It’s simply a demonstration of the self-empowering effects of having something to believe in. Its all humility and braggadocio. One of those songs that can easily and effectively be reapplied to something more personal.

* Your favourite song about rebellion/revolution?

AS: “Golpe de Estado” – Immortal Technique

* Your favourite song last year?

TV: Golden Drugs – Ghost Song (In The Midnight Sun Or Stubbornly Persistent Illusion)

* Your favourite movie about music?

TV: Jimi Hendrix (1973)

* Jack White or Conor Oberst – which one do you prefer and why?

AS: Interesting. I’ve never even compared the two, let alone considered having to chose one over the other. I think both are talented and I respect most of the music each of them have made. I’ve met Conor a few times, hung out and played some music with him. He’s always been very gracious so I might be a bit biased simply by circumstance.

* The most overrated band/artist?

AS: Oh, I see. You’re just trying to get us to stir up a little drama. I am not much for shit talking on people who are just trying to make music. some people do it with sincerity and some obviously do it without, but it’s still just music. Music, at its worst, is just annoying. Sure, it’s done a little harm indirectly, but it’s never killed anyone or driven a species to extinction. I have far more respect for an over-rated, insincere musician than I do for a super talented munitions manufacturer or coal industry lobbyist.

* The best song you’ve ever written / recorded?

AS: Yeah, this is another question I’m not gonna be able to answer. I don’t use words like that to describe anything I do. To me, our new album sounds more like us than any of our previous albums. But that doesn’t mean that the songs on it are better or anything. I don’t really make comparisons like that. I don’t have favorites. Some are more fun to play but that doesn’t make them good songs. Regardless, it’s all the past to me. I only think about the songs that I’m working on, not the ones i’ve already written.

* Your favourite german song/record?

TV: Robert Schumann – Fantasie in C, Op 17

* Your favourite record of all time?

TV: Bob Dylan – Another Side Of Bob Dylan
