* Your three favourite Punk singles/songs?
Steve says:
I’ll throw out three I’ve been repeating recently:
„I Got Heaven“ – Mannequin Pussy
„New Noise“ – Refused
„New Big Prinz“ – The Fall
Sure I guess all these bands are „post-punk“ but it’s all punk in spirit.
* A record that will make you dance?
Mitch says: Caribou – Honey
We were fortunate to tour with Caribou back in 2007 when Andorra came out. If he released Honey that year, I’d have to be physically restrained from shaking my ass on stage every night.
* Your favourite song lyrics?
Mitch says: „Fuck everyone in this venue, especially me“ (PUP – Hunger For Death)
The song opens with „fuck everyone on this planet, except for you“. I just love how they flip that first line on its head for the second verse. It’s inherently funny, but also a feeling that you usually reserve for screaming in your own head, as opposed to out loud at a concert. Everybody sucks, including me, but you’re cool.
* The best “new” artist / band right now?
Luke says: Little Junior.
Their newest record is a pop rock masterpiece. Every song is an instant classic, vocal melodies that stick and riffs that would make anyone want to learn guitar just to try and play them. Funny and poignant lyrics… They are criminally underrated and should be headlining their own huge tours. As a live band they are so captivating and charmingly cool.
* Your favourite song about rebellion/revolution?
Steve says:
„Children of the Revolution“ – by T. Rex, although in this case I suppose I am referencing the Violent Femmes cover version. In Alex Gibney’s documentary Casino Jack and the United States of Money he uses this song during a montage of young College Republicans (a conservative student society who were becoming more influential during the Ronald Reagan presidency). It is such a great use of the song, as these young conservative movements were „born“ out of the backlash against a myriad of left-wing student movements during the „revolutions“ of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The documentary is only fifteen years old, but feels almost quaint in its depiction of corruption and grift compared with today. Perhaps there is still something to be gleaned from a rewatch.
* Your favourite song this year so far? (or of last year)
Mitch says: Lizzy McAlpine – Drunk, Running
This record (Older) sounds incredible. I love the direct line Lizzy draws between two relationships in this song – one being her partner’s relationship with alcohol, and the other being her relationship with her partner. The vocal layers are beautiful. It’s such a well composed song in every aspect that makes up songwriting.
* Your favourite movie about music – and why?
Steve says: 24 Hour Party People
It captures perhaps my favourite era/movement/scene in music history without trying to tell the story of each band or artist cradle to grave. It doesn’t follow the typical biopic formula nor have any ridiculously implausible songwriting scenes where a band writes their hit song in about the same amount of elapsed time as the song itself. Also, it is genuinely funny.
* Arcade Fire, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah or Vampire Weekend – which one do you prefer and why?
Luke says:
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, this isn’t even close. CYHSY were the soundtrack to my first summer after moving out of my parents house. Their first record is so rooted in those memories for me and linked to such a formative time in my life.
* Your favourite german song/record?
Luke says: Can – Ege Bamyasi
* Your favourite record of all time?
Mitch says:
While this is a virtually impossible question to answer, I think my hand is forced here: The Strokes – Is This It? Because if it didn’t exist, neither would our band. And I prefer to exist!
