Das Anfang September erschienene neue Album „International“ des britischen Trio Saint Etienne ist zugleich ihr letztes Album. 13 Platten hat die Band seit 1990 veröffentlicht und beispielsweise mit „Heart Failed (In The Back Of A Taxi)“ von 2000 einen der großen Klassiker des britischen Synth-Indie-Pop geschrieben:
Saint Etienne bewegen sich seit Beginn zwischen den Polen Indie-Pop und Dancefloor, schauten dazwischen aber auch immer wieder in der Easy Listening Lounge für einen kleinen Cocktail vorbei. Die Times beschrieb diese eigentümliche Mischung treffend mit „Saint Etienne fused the grooviness of Swinging Sixties London with a post-acid house backbeat“. Da Bandmitglied Bob Stanley auch noch gleich mehrere Bücher über die Geschichte der Popkultur wie „Yeah Yeah Yeah: The Story of Modern Pop“ & „Let’s Do It: The Birth of Pop Music: A History“ geschrieben hat, ist er natürlich die Idealbesetzung für ein German Blind Date!
Die Heiterkeit – Was passiert ist
All of these names are new to me! From the singer’s annunciation, which is rather stagy, I’m guessing the words are pretty significant. I can’t speak German and only remember the odd word, like luftkissenfahrzeug and tonbandgerät. Is it from a musical? It should be.
Ja Panik – Libertatia
Intruiging vid, very clean boys. The vocal is a little mannered, and it’s certainly catchy, but it is a little too pleased with itself to be enjoyable for me.
Mia. – Hungriges Herz
Ah right, this is terrific. I like her voice a lot. The backing sounds a little like music for a ’00s cartoon until it gets to the chorus… I mean that in a good way. Mia looks like a proper pop star, and I hope she is in Germany.
International Music – Guter Ort
They look like Sparks – there’s Ron, and there’s Russell, and there’s a slightly squashed cross between Ron and Russell (Run? Rossell?). The backing reminds me a little of New Musik, only with a slight ska feel. Very 1979/80.
Blumfeld – Tausend Tränen Tief
A touch of George Michael about this, „Older“-era, and maybe the Pet Shop Boys‘ „Behaviour“. Very smooth and I like the way it has a minimal production yet still lodges in your brain after one listen. I’ll guess this was a massive hit.
