Glenn Donaldson aka The Reds, Pinks & Purples ist einer der hardest working Indie-Songwriter überhaupt. Der Kalifornier veröffentlicht so unablässig Alben, dass es schon schwer fällt, überhaupt mit den jeweils aktuellen Veröffentlichungen Schritt zu halten. Doch der Mann aus San Francisco schreibt einfach zu viele gute Lieder mit smarten Texten, als dass man sie vorbeifliegen lassen sollte. Ich war ein sehr großer Fan seines Outtakes-Albums (!) „This Is Adult Art School“ von 2024, auf dem mit „Your Taste Makes You Strange“ und „Desperate World“ gleich zwei seiner besten Lieder zu finden waren. Auch auf der neuesten Platte „Acknowledge Kindness“ ist mit „Emo Band“ ein sehr schöner Hit, der wunderbar vom Älterwerden in Genres der ewigen Jugend wie Punk und Emo erzählt:

Düsseldorf Düsterboys – Teneriffa

Is this the German Everly Brothers? I love the retro tape-recorded sound and the simple arrangements very 50’s-60’s early rock n roll and folk. I am a huge fan of Buddy Holly and Richie Valens, and I am guessing this band is too. This is an excellent start. There was a band here called The Dutchess and the Duke, who made a perfect album in 2008. These bands should have toured together.

Tristan Brusch – Am Herz vorbei

I am immediately hearing Leonard Cohen and Jacques Brel in the nylon-string guitar and passionate singing. I feel like Nick Cave is important in Germany, so I would mention him too. This one is really taking me on a ride with the cinematic strings. All these tracks are really interesting, but this is my favorite so far. This could be a Tindersticks tune too. My YouTube auto-played into another Tristan Brusch track that I am also enjoying.

Mutter – Die Erde wird der schönste Platz in All

Is this really from 1994? The stacked backing vocals and lo-fi tape sound make this sound more like an obscure 1970’s private press record.

Locas In Love – Stefanie sagt

This is definitely indie-pop. I can see why you picked this, definitely a Velvet Underground nod in the title, and Yo La Tengo is in there too. There was an Australian band in the 1990’s called Love Positions that also comes to mind. This track is really growing on me, and I want to hear more of this EP.

Trümmer – Wo ist die Euphorie

I was hoping you’d include a little post-punk/new wave. Germany is really good at that sound. The vocalist soars on this. Oddly this is reminding me most of a classic French band called Asylum Party.

Now my algorithm is giving me all these interesting German bands I would have never found otherwise. Thank you for the recommendations.
