Mit „The Filth & The Fury“ über die Sex Pistols hat Julien Temple die für mich beste Musikdokumentation überhaupt gedreht – mit genügend Szene-Einblick (kein Wunder, war Temple doch damals für den berüchtigten Pistols-Spielfilm „The Great Rock’n’Roll Swindle“ ebenfalls verantwortlich), aber auch der notwendigen Distanz und dem künstlerischen Vermögen, weit mehr als eine schnöde „berühmte Leute von damals sprechen in die Kamera“ – Doku abzubilden. Mit „The Future Is Unwritten“ über Joe Strummer und dem gerade in den Kinos laufenden „Shane“ über Pogues-Frontmann Shane MacGowan sind Temple zwei weitere bemerkenswerte Filme über die Punkszene und ihre Folgen gelungen.

* Your opinion on John Lydon / Johnny Rotten?
I much prefer Johnny Rotten to John Lydon. He was on the right side of history.
* Your favourite song about rebellion/revolution?
Tired of Waiting – The Kinks. This was written in the seemingly endless weeks in early 1965, during Winston Churchill’s terminal illness, when Ray Davies and the rest of England were waiting for him to die.
* Your favourite song last year?
My Future – Billie Eilish
* Your favourite fictional movie about music – and why?
The Girl Can’t Help It (1957)– I just love watching Jane Mansfield turning round corners as she walks. Also because you can tell the movie was directed by a cartoon director, Frank Tashkent. And last but not least because you get to see Little Richard, Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran in their first glorious flush of rebellion.
* Your favourite documentary about music – and why?
Don’t Look Back (1965)- Bob Dylan. Because you get to feel like you’re Bob Dylan’s roadie, by his side and watching the whole thing break open as it happened
* The best movie you’ve ever directed?
The next one.
* Your favourite german song/record?
1) Radioactivity – Kraftwerk. He reminds me of hunting in the born-again forests of Chernobyl.
2) Dandy – The German Kinks – a fat German tribute band in Englishfox-hunting jackets that don’t quite fit. Singing in heavy German accents. Priceless!
3) Balls to the Wall – Accept. Not a great song but I have fond memories of directing a video where the lead singer literally rode a wrecking ball into the side of a building. Screeching heavy-metal style while demolishing it. An idea later ripped off by Miley Cyrus!
* Your favourite record of all time?
You Really Got Me – The Kinks. I first heard it aged 11 under the sheets on a crystal set transistor radio and it was like someone had put a dirty nuclear bomb inside my pillow. I’m still processing it nearly 60 years later.
