Es ist immer eine interessante Frage für mich: wie wirkt deutschsprachige Musik auf einen Hörer, der die Lyrics nicht versteht? Wie sehr beeinflusst der Inhalt des gesungenen Wortes die Rezeption des Songs als Ganzes? Deshalb habe ich Herman Dune, der gerade ein wirklich wieder hervorragendes Folk-Album veröffentlicht hat, fünf deutsche Songs vorgespielt. Die Düsseldorf Düsterboys und Nino Aus Wien sind die beiden Künstler, die unter dem ziemlich kritischen Blicks Dune am Besten bestehen, was auch dahingehend interessant ist, weil „Taxi Driver“ von Nino sicherlich das am meisten über die Lyrics funktionierende Lied ist – dachte ich zumindest bis jetzt immer. Aber offensichtlich ist es nicht nur Ninos Erzählung einer Taxifahrt durch Wien, die zu einer Lebensbeichte in drei Minuten wird, sondern gerade auch die rauhe, ungekünstelte Instrumentierung, die einen Zugang zum Lied eröffnet.

* Ja, Panik – Nevermind

Unfortunately my German is the worst, so I might be missing out on the poetry, but I’m not impressed by the vocal skills here at all. Especially for a song that makes a clear reference to NIRVANA, Kurt Cobain being one of the best singers ever, it really sounds meek to me. The melody is not really interesting and the guitar sound, I feel like I’ve heard it all before, in different languages… It doesn’t work for me

* Düsseldorf Düsterboys – Teneriffa

I dig it! Nice mood, I like the way the voices blend. Seems simple, and for what I can tell, there is some nice rhyming, I even understood “Ich Liebe Dich”, which is ALWAYS a great lyric. I like the title too. My favorite in the list, I like a good duo!

* Brezel Göring – Meine Medizin

No, no, no (nein)… Terrible sound and song. I understand there’s a vague attempt to emulate Lee & Nancy here, but the voices are terrible and the guitar sounds awful. I’m not sure what they say, but it seems like a list of drugs, Velvet Underground had Heroine, a masterpiece, I don’t think we’re anywhere near that here…

* Element Of Crime – Delmenhorst

I guess…. They seem to know what they are doing. I’m sure they got the song they wanted. It’s not really my cup of tea but I can appreciate the work…

* Nino aus Wien – Taxi Driver

OK! Sounds sincere to me, nice sound, cool melody… I sense maybe some influence from the great Shane MacGowan. Guitar sounds good as well, there’s some folk and enough punk to make it a bit biting…
