Carter The Unstoppable Sexmachine – oder kurz Carter USM – waren in den 90ern eine der ungewöhnlicheren britischen Bands. Sänger JimBob hatte ein Faible für wortspielreiche, popkulturellreferenzlastige Lyrics mit viel Witz, eine kompromisslose DIY-Attitude, aber gemeinsam mit Gitarrist Fruitbat auch ein Gefühl für große Melodien. Eine Kombination, die ihnen durchaus zurecht den Beinamen „Punk Pet Shop Boys“ einbrachte (von denen sie tatsächlich auch einmal „Rent“ als Coverversion einspielten).

Ein schönes Beispiel ist ihre einzige Top-Ten-Single „The Only Living Boy In New Cross“, was Simon & Garfunkels „The only living boy in New York” in den wenig glamourösen Londoner Stadtteil New Cross überträgt und eine gestreckte Faust für alle uncoole Subkulturen reckt:

I want to give peace, love and kisses out
To this whole stinking world
The gypsies, the travellers and the thieves
The good, the bad, the average and unique
The grebos, the crusties, the goths
And the only living boy in New Cross

Gerade ist eine Singles-Compilation erschienen, die unbedingt empfehlenswert ist und neben „The Only Living Boy In New Cross“ auch den „Ruby Tuesday“ zitierenden Song „After The Watershed“ oder „Anytime Anyplace Anywhere“ von ihrem herausragenden 1991er Album „30 Something“ enthält. Letzteres landete damals eine fast nie vergebene 10 out of 10-Höchstnote im NME: „This brilliant, bold record will still be among the best ten albums of the year come the end of ’91: testimony to how Carter, the unlikely lads of the past two years, have nailed down their instinctive feel for pop with a hookline and a point of view.“

‘This is Spinal Tap’. The only realistic film about a band ever made.

Pet Shop Boys. A big influence on Carter. I love the dramatic, orchestral nature of their big hits. And the way they’ve always stayed true to their original concept. Two blokes, one sings, the other one stands behind a keyboard.
