Die kanadische Band The Burning Hell spielt entgegen ihres Namens keinen lauten Death Metal, sondern smarten Folk. Um Singer/Songwriter Mathias Kom & Ariel Sharratt scheren sich verschiedene Mitmusiker, um gemeinsam unter dem The Burning Hell – Namen nun schon seit 2006 Platten zu veröffentlichen. „The Burning Hell have been writing party anthems about the apocalypse since before the apocalypse arrived at the party“ – Mitte des Jahres erschien mit „Ghost Palace“ ihr jüngstes Album unter dem Burning Hell – Namen.
Großer Höhepunkt in ihrer Diskographie ist für mich „Fuck the Government, I Love You“, das seinen Refrain direkt aus Fetzen einer Partyunterhaltung bastelte:
Pass the wine, fuck the government, I love you
Three statements overheard at once in the crowded room
But I could not be sure which one had come from you
So I passed you the wine and said yes, fuck the government, I love you too
The Burning Hell habe ich sechs deutschsprachige Songs von Ja, Panik bis Die Sterne vorgespielt:
Düsseldorf Düsterboys – Teneriffa
We loved this right away: the relaxed production, guys singing nice harmonies, the island vibes when the piano comes in… it sounds timeless and like the sort of band we’d like to be in if we lived in the Ruhrgebiet.
Voodoo Jürgens – Heite grob ma Tote aus:
Is that organ and harmonica together? We can’t tell. But whatever it is, we like it. Our German definitely isn’t good enough to appreciate the dialect here but we’re into his voice and the overall vibe is cool.
Brezel Göring – Tschernobyl
The drums and shaker sound awesome together. Why do so many bands overproduce the drums? This song gets it right.
Die Sterne – Was hat dich bloß so ruiniert?
It’s so cool when a band can take a simple chord progression, play it over and over again, and still manage to develop the song so dynamically. Also we love music videos that make jokes about the music industry.
Ja, Panik – Nevermind
It’s so rare to hear songs that are mostly just electric guitar and vocals and this made us remember how much we love the electric guitar. It’s also a very cool move to wait for four and a half minutes to have the band come in. Great song.
Der Nino aus Wien – Taxi Driver
More than anything else you sent us, this one makes us wish we understood more German, and in particular makes us want to learn German in Vienna. It’s amazing when the quality of someone’s voice can convey that their lyrics are great even when you don’t really understand the lyrics themselves!
