Blur, Oasis, Pulp – und eben Suede. Die vier großen, musikalisch so unterschiedlichen Bands, die in den 90ern als Synonym für Brit-Pop verstanden wurden.
Suede wurden 1989 von Mat Osman und Brett Anderson gegründet, der seine damalige Freundin Justine Frischman in die Band holte. Frischman verliebte sich später in Blurs Damon Albarn und veröffentlichte mit ihrer Band Elastica eines der besten Alben der 90er, aber das ist eine andere Geschichte!
Suede war von den genannten großen Vier die erste wirklich erfolgreiche Band. Ihre frühen Singles – von The Drowners über Metal Mickey zu Animal Nitrate – waren regelrechte Sensationen. Ihre Debütsingle „The Drowners“ wurde, damals eine Sache von enormer Bedeutung, 1992 gleich zur Single des Jahres im NME gewählt (auf den Folgeplätzen übrigens 2. „Sheela Na Gig“ (P.J. Harvey), 3. „Motorcycle Emptiness“ (Manic Street Preachers), 4. „Creep“ (Radiohead), 5. „Drive“ (R.E.M.), 6. „Jump Around“ (House Of Pain). Ordentliches Jahr!).
Die ersten drei Platten von Suede sind aus der britischen Popkultur der 90er nicht wegzudenken. Mit „Coming Up“ waren Suede 1996 dann mit einer halben Million verkauften Schallplatten so richtig im Brit-Pop-Hype angekommen. Nach etwas schwächeren Folgealben folgte eine Pause von mehr als einem Jahrzehnt, doch seit 2013 veröffentlicht die Gruppe um Brett Anderson kontinuierlich neue Platten, mit „Antidepressant“ erscheint nun bereits die fünfte Veröffentlichung in dieser zweiten Band-Phase.
Insbesondere „The Blue Hour“ von 2018 war ein bemerkenswert starkes Spätwerk, das sich auch noch mal in den Jahres-Top Ten des Popblogs platzierte.
Mat Osman, der neben Brett Anderson einzig verbliebene Bandgründer, hat unsere Fragen nach seinen Lieblingsplatten beantwortet:
* Your three favourite Punk singles/songs?
Oh, depends how broadly we define punk but if you were to allow me The Only Ones Another Girl, Another Planet, Blondie’s Rip Her To Shreds and the Sex Pistols‘ Bodies, then I’d be a happy man.
* A record that will make you dance?
I believe in Miracles by The Jackson Sisters
* Your favourite song lyrics?
The whole of The Bishonen by Momus but especially this verse:
„He taught me to be good with words, he bought me ceremonial swords
And in this way came grace and expertise
The words were to cut down and to kill the muscle-bound
The swords to fell my intellectual enemies“
* The best “new” artist / band right now?
I love Sprints, an Irish band who toured with us last year. They just have such presence and power on stage and their songs are so jagged and propulsive.

Is The Stooges‘ Search and Destroy about rebellion/revolution? Let’s say it is.

Pulp. Better songs.
